The stranglehold that running backs had on the top spot was finally broken this week and it was not a by quarterback. This week's top scorer was a wide receiver, Vincent Jackson who was followed by Aaron Rodgers, Julio Jones, Willis McGahee and Philip Rivers. Jackson being the top scorer is surprising due to his numbers this season being below preseason expectations, but not unexpected. Unlike Week 8 when 4 running backs were in the top 5, this week only 1 made and it was not a elite one in McGahee. Jones was the major surprise in this group, but only in that he made it so high in the list, not in that he had a great breakout game (see Week 9 Start/ Sit Part 3: WRs for why a breakout game was expected).
The rest of the major surprises of Week 9 are Carson Palmer, Matt Moore, Andy Dalton, Marshawn Lynch, Reggie Bush and John Skelton #7, #8, #10, #13, #15 and #25 respectively. All of them had unexpected good games out of nowhere with the exception of Andy Dalton who is turning out to be a great pick for the Bengals. None of them should be expected to be on this list consistently at all just as the surprises in Week 8 (Laurent Robinson, Curtis Painter, Scott Chandler, Brent Celek and Curtis Brinkley) did not make it into this week's list.
As usual for Yahoo! leagues, quarterbacks have a large presence at the top thanks to the scoring format and everybody should keep this in mind when looking at the numbers from some of the quarterbacks in the bottom range.
